The best way to winterize your double knockout roses is to stop feeding them in August. This gives them to stop growing and to become dormant for the winter season. You should continue to water them until the first frost. Get rid of any dead parts on the roses before October. Pile 12 inches of compost around your roses. Tie all the roses, place chicken wire around the roses, and then place mulch around them twelve inches high. When the spring comes remove all of these things and let your double knockout roses bloom.
